Conception covers the three months before trying, when folate status matters most — the neural tube closes by about week six, often before a positive test. Pregnancy picks up from there and adds the iron and iodine that matter as the pregnancy goes on. Neither contains vitamin A.

Folic acid and vitamin D in pregnancy, and vitamin drops for children, are free from the NHS if you are eligible. Ask your midwife or health visitor. Nurture goes further than the free vitamins, but it is worth a conversation rather than an assumption.
