Nurture Pregnancy is the one made for it — 400 µg folic acid and 10 µg vitamin D as the NHS recommends, plus iron, iodine, zinc and the B vitamins, and deliberately no vitamin A. Do not take it alongside another multivitamin, and skip cod liver oil entirely. Tell your midwife what you are taking. If you have had a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect you may need 5 mg folic acid, which is prescription only.

First covers vitamin D for babies from birth; Little covers vitamins A, C and D for ages one to four. Formula-fed babies taking more than 500 ml a day generally do not need extra vitamin D because formula is already fortified. Never exceed the dose on the bottle — the margin is much narrower in infants than adults. Confirm with your health visitor or GP.
